What is a bead crochet ball?

A bead crochet ball is crocheted with beads as one continuous spiral over a round core, such as a wooden bead or a bauble. It starts with a few beads at the pole, increases in six wedges until the equator, runs straight round, then mirrors the decreases to close.

That's why its chart is a single band as wide as the equator, with a triangular notch cut out of the top and bottom of every wedge. The halves lean opposite ways because increases fall at the end of a wedge and decreases at its start.

What a crochet ball chart is for

  • Christmas balls. Covered baubles with stripes, stars and spirals.

  • Beaded beads. Large round beads for necklaces and pendants.

  • Rattles and toys. Covered wooden balls with a bright, firm surface.

Bead crochet ball questions

What's the difference from a bead crochet rope?

A rope is a tube with a fixed number of beads per round. A ball grows and shrinks in six wedges, so its chart is a notched band, not a reflowed tube.

What core should I use?

A wooden bead or a plastic bauble that matches the equator of your chart. Wevy's 3D preview shows the size for your bead count.

Is it the same as a peyote ball?

No. A peyote ball is stitched from flat faces with a needle. A crochet ball is crocheted in one spiral. Each has its own grid.
