What is a bead crochet rope?

A bead crochet rope is a tube of seed beads crocheted with a slip stitch. Every bead goes onto one thread first, in reverse order, and is then crocheted round a circle a set number of beads around, often 6 to 12.

The beads nest half a bead apart each round, so the rope is one continuous spiral. A turn takes the circumference plus half a bead, and a straight column in your draft comes out as a slanted line on the rope. Patterns drawn without that correction come out sheared.

What a rope chart is for

  • Bracelets. A rope closed into a ring with a magnetic or glued clasp.

  • Necklaces and lariats. Long ropes in spirals, zigzags and repeating motifs.

  • Jewelry sets. A rope that matches a gerdan or sylianka.

How Wevy handles bead crochet

Three views

Draft, corrected and simulation side by side: what you draw, how it nests, and the front of the rope.

True reflow

Rows alternate w and w + 1 beads, read from the bottom up, as the rope is worked.

Bead crochet rope questions

Why does my rope pattern look slanted?

Each round of a rope takes the circumference plus half a bead, so straight columns on a draft spiral round the rope. Wevy's corrected view shows that shift so you can design for it.

What does "6 around" mean?

It's the rope's circumference in beads. A 6-around rope is thin and flexible; 9 to 12 around gives room for bigger motifs.

Why is the stringing order reversed?

The last bead strung is the first one crocheted. Wevy lists the runs from the end of the pattern so you can thread them straight off the list.

How many beads do I need?

Multiply the rope's circumference by its number of rounds. The rope calculator gives beads, weight and thickness for your bead size.
