What is a peyote pod?

A peyote pod is a three-dimensional beaded bead. Each petal is worked in peyote outward from a seed bead, with herringbone pairs at the ends, then the petals are zipped together edge to edge so the piece closes into a pod.

Seen from outside, every petal is a diamond. Printed patterns usually show the unfolded "butterfly" you actually stitch, which makes the finished design hard to picture. Wevy lets you draw on the diamonds you will see and produces the butterflies for you.

What a pod pattern is for

  • Pendants and charms. A single pod on a cord or a bail.

  • Earrings. A pair of small pods, or a pod as the drop of a longer earring.

  • Pattern sales. Butterfly charts and word charts, ready to sell.

How Wevy handles a peyote pod

Draw on the diamond

Each petal is shown as the diamond face of the finished pod, side by side.

Every petal its own

Paint one petal without touching the others, or repeat a motif around.

3D of the zipped pod

Turn the finished pod round to check how the petals meet.

Charts you stitch from

The export unfolds each petal into numbered and lettered butterflies with a word chart and the zip row marked.

Peyote pod questions

What is a word chart?

A written list of the beads to pick up, stitch by stitch: "2A, 1B, 3A". Pod patterns are usually stitched from the word chart, with the graph as a reference.

How many beads are in a petal?

It depends on the number of rows. A petal of N rows has N² − 1 stitched beads; its second seed bead belongs to the neighbouring petal.

Can every petal be different?

Yes. Each petal is stored and exported on its own.
