What is a sylianka?

A sylianka (силянка) is a traditional Ukrainian beaded necklace made of open diamond netting. Its name comes from the old word for stringing beads, and it is worked by hand, without a loom.

It is usually made with two needles: both leave a shared bead, each picks up beads down its own side of the diamond, and they cross through a shared bead again below. The number of beads on each side, typically odd, sets the size of the diamonds and the motifs they can hold.

What a sylianka chart is for

  • Traditional necklaces. Diamonds, rosettes and stripes in the colors of a region.

  • Wide collars. Sylianka with more diamonds across for a broad neckline.

  • Sets with a gerdan. Matching colors across woven and netted pieces.

How Wevy handles a sylianka

The real mesh

Diamonds with odd bead counts per side, as you net them, not a square grid.

Necklace in 3D

See the mesh drape as a necklace before you string the first bead.

Two needles, called out

Make mode tells you what to pick up on the left needle, the right needle and the bead they cross through.

Exact counts

The bead key counts each color in the mesh and estimates its weight.

Sylianka questions

What's the difference between a sylianka and a gerdan?

A gerdan is usually woven on a loom into a solid band and panel. A sylianka is open diamond netting worked by hand with two needles.

How do I read a sylianka pattern?

Each diamond is a loop: count the beads on each side and the shared bead where the needles cross. Wevy's Make mode walks through each diamond and names every pickup.

Can I make a sylianka pattern online?

Yes. Wevy runs in the browser on a phone or a computer, with nothing to install.
