What is peyote stitch?

Peyote stitch, also called gourd or mosaic stitch, is a bead-weaving technique in which each new bead sits in the gap between two beads of the previous row. The beads stand upright, and every other column sits half a bead lower than its neighbours.

That offset is why a peyote chart is a staggered grid, not a square one. Drawing on the right grid matters: a design drafted on square paper comes out stretched and leaning once it is stitched.

What a peyote chart is for

  • Cuffs and bracelets. Dense, flexible bands in Delica beads, flat or zipped into a tube.

  • Pieces and panels. Pictures, lettering and geometric repeats with a smooth surface.

  • 3D shapes. Peyote is also the base for pods, stars and balls, which have their own grids.

How Wevy handles peyote

The right stagger

Peyote columns are offset half a bead, the way the beads lock together.

Delica-true cells

Choose Miyuki Delica or round seed beads and the grid takes on their shape.

Counts while you draw

The bead key totals each color and weight as the design grows.

Make mode

Work through the chart row by row with the color runs listed and read aloud.

Peyote pattern questions

Is peyote the same as mosaic stitch?

Yes. Mosaic stitch is the common name for peyote in Ukrainian and Russian beadwork. Both describe the same staggered weave.

Can I make even-count and odd-count peyote?

Yes. Set the grid to any width; the chart shows each column's offset either way.

Which beads work best for peyote?

Miyuki Delica cylinders give the flattest, most even surface. Round seed beads work too; pick yours in the catalog and the grid follows its shape.

Can I turn a peyote pattern into brick stitch?

A peyote chart turned 90° reads as brick stitch. Wevy also has a dedicated brick stitch grid with the rows offset instead of the columns.

Is the peyote grid free?

Yes. Flat peyote is part of the Free plan. The 3D peyote pod, star and ball grids come with Hobby.
