Right angle weave pieces
What is right angle weave?
Right angle weave (RAW) is beadwork built from units of four beads locked into a ring. Each bead sits on an edge shared with the next unit: tops and bottoms lie flat, sides stand upright, so neighbouring beads always meet at a right angle. The result is a soft, flexible fabric with a small hole in every unit.
It is often worked with two needles, as cross weave or Ukrainian монастирське плетіння: both needles leave a bead in opposite directions, each picks up the side bead on its own hand, and they cross through one more bead that closes the ring. Single-needle RAW makes the same fabric by circling each unit.
Two needles, four beads, one unit at a time
- 1
Start. One bead to the middle of the thread, a needle on each end.
- 2
Pick up. Each needle takes the side bead on its own hand.
- 3
Cross. Both needles pass through one bead in opposite directions and pull tight.
What a right angle weave chart is for

Earrings and bookmarks. Light shapes with crisp diagonal outlines.
How Wevy handles right angle weave
The real lattice
Every bead sits on the edge of its unit: flat ones drawn across, upright ones down, the hole left open.
Two needles, called out
Make mode names what goes on the left needle, the right needle and the bead they cross through.
Numbered units
Each unit on the chart carries its number, the same one the word chart and Make mode use.

Right angle weave questions
How do I read a right angle weave chart?
Each ring of four beads is one unit, numbered on the chart. A bead drawn across lies flat, a bead drawn down stands upright, and the empty square in the middle is the unit's hole.
Is right angle weave the same as cross weave?
Yes. Cross weave is right angle weave worked with two needles that cross through the last bead of every unit; the beads end up in exactly the same place.
Is right angle weave the same as square stitch?
No. Square stitch lays beads in straight rows and columns, all facing the same way. In right angle weave every bead turns at a right angle to its neighbours and four of them close a unit.
Can I make cubic right angle weave?
Yes. Cubic right angle weave has its own 3D grid in Wevy, where every unit becomes a cube of twelve beads.
Is the right angle weave grid free?
Yes. The flat right angle weave grid is part of the Free plan. The cubic grid comes with Hobby and Pro.
