What is a gerdan?

A gerdan (ґердан) is a traditional Ukrainian beaded necklace, best known from the Hutsul and Bukovyna regions of the Carpathians. The classic form is a woven band that ends in a wider panel, or a medallion, resting on the chest.

Today most gerdans are woven on a bead loom: warp threads run lengthwise and each row of beads is strung on the weft and pressed up between them. The beads in a loom chart sit in straight rows and columns, which is why a gerdan pattern looks like a grid of upright cells rather than a staggered mesh.

What a gerdan chart is for

  • Traditional motifs. Rhombuses, crosses, viburnum, poppies and vyshyvanka borders, kept true to scale.

  • Modern panels. Portraits, lettering and pictures on a wider panel, traced from a reference image.

  • Sets and sales. A matching bracelet or earrings from the same palette, or a pattern to sell with a bead key.

How Wevy handles a gerdan

True bead proportions

Loom cells are drawn in the real shape of the bead you choose, so a circle stays a circle once it's woven.

Real colors

Pick Preciosa, Miyuki Delica or TOHO articles by number and finish. The bead key counts each color and estimates its weight.

See it finished

The 3D preview renders the panel with the glass, matte and metallic finishes you picked.

Make it row by row

Make mode lists each row's colors in order and reads them aloud in English or Ukrainian while you weave.

Gerdan pattern questions

How wide should a gerdan pattern be?

The starting grid is 58 beads wide and 170 rows long, a common size for a panel gerdan in 10/0 seed beads. Change the width and height at any time; the bead counts update as you draw.

Which beads are best for a gerdan?

Czech Preciosa 10/0 rocailles are the traditional choice. Miyuki Delica 11/0 cylinders give a flatter, more even surface. Choose the bead in Wevy and the grid takes on its proportions.

Can I make a gerdan pattern from a photo?

Yes. Place the photo under the grid, set its size and opacity, and trace it into a chart; tracing comes with Hobby and Pro. The free photo-to-pattern tool gives you a first draft without an account.

Can I print the pattern?

Yes. Export a PDF with the chart, color letters and bead key. The Free plan includes one watermarked export a month; Hobby and Pro remove the watermark.

Is the gerdan grid free?

Yes. Gerdan is part of the Free plan, together with the 3D preview, Make mode and the bead catalog.
