What is square stitch?

Square stitch is an off-loom technique in which every bead sits directly above the one below it, so the beads line up in straight rows and columns. Each new bead is sewn to its neighbour in the previous row, which makes the fabric firm and lets you shape the edges as you go.

The result looks like loom weaving, so the chart is an aligned grid too. Without warp threads to finish, square stitch suits small pieces, shaped edges and work that grows in more than one direction.

What a square stitch chart is for

  • Earrings and pendants. Small shapes with stepped edges, without warps to weave in.

  • Bracelets and bands. Loom-style designs worked off-loom.

  • Pixel motifs. Icons and lettering where every bead must line up.

Square stitch questions

What's the difference between square stitch and loom weaving?

The finished look is the same: aligned rows and columns. Loom weaving adds a whole row at once on warp threads; square stitch sews each bead to the row below with a needle, so there are no warp ends to finish.

Can I use a loom pattern for square stitch?

Yes. The bead layout is identical, so a loom chart works bead for bead in square stitch.

What's the difference between square stitch and brick stitch?

In square stitch the beads line up in columns. In brick stitch every other row shifts half a bead, like bricks in a wall, so it needs a staggered grid.

Is the square stitch grid free?

Yes. It's part of the Free plan.
